Terms of use

These terms apply when you use openmods. In short: openmods is a free list of open-source game mods. The mods stay on GitHub, their authors keep all rights, and you use them at your own risk.

What openmods is

openmods (openmods.nexus) lists open-source game mods. Each mod is a public repository on GitHub. openmods shows data from these repositories and links to GitHub for the source code and the downloads. It hosts no mod files.

Using openmods is free. You can browse it without an account.

Your account

  • To add a mod, you sign in with your GitHub account. GitHub's terms apply to your GitHub account.
  • Keep your GitHub account safe. What happens through your sign-in counts as done by you.
  • We may end the sessions of an account, or block it, if it breaks these terms or the rules.
  • The privacy page explains which data the sign-in uses.

Adding a mod

  • You may add a mod only if its repository is public, has an accepted open-source license, and has the files openmods.json and openmods.md. The tutorial shows how.
  • The two openmods files show that the mod's author wants the mod on openmods. To take it off openmods, the author deletes them, and the mod disappears at the next refresh.
  • Do not add mods that break the rules: no malware, no stolen work, no illegal content.
  • The owner of a repository is responsible for its content, including the two openmods files. openmods shows what the repository says.

Rights to the content

  • Mod authors keep all rights to their work. The mod's license says what other people may do with it.
  • By putting the openmods files into a repository, its owner allows openmods to store and show the repository's data and the content of these files, on openmods and in previews of openmods pages, for example on Discord.
  • Game names and game pictures belong to their owners. openmods uses them only to show which game a mod is for.
  • The name openmods and its logo belong to openmods.

Downloads and your own risk

  • Downloads come from GitHub, not from openmods. GitHub's terms apply there.
  • Mods are made by other people. openmods does not check their code and does not test them.
  • You install and use mods at your own risk. Back up your game and your saves first.
  • Open source helps: you, or someone you trust, can read a mod's code before you use it.

Removal and reports

We remove mods only for the reasons on the rules page: malware, stolen work and illegal content. To report a problem, write to report@openmods.nexus or tell us on the openmods Discord server. Bugs and requests for missing games go to the Discord server.

The Discord server

People talk about mods on the openmods Discord server, not on this site. Discord's terms and the server's own rules apply there.

No guarantee and liability

  • openmods is free and comes as it is. We do our best to keep it running, but we cannot promise that it is always available or free of errors.
  • We are not responsible for mods, for the content of repositories, or for other sites that openmods links to.
  • As far as the law allows, we are not liable for damage that comes from using openmods or the mods it lists. Nothing in these terms limits liability where the law does not allow this.

Changes

We may change openmods and these terms. If you keep using openmods after a change, the new terms apply. Last change: 17 October 2026.
